Gram is a Rabi crop in India. In India, it also knows by the names such as Chana and Chickpea. It is sown in arid and semi-arid regions of the country. It is used as food in various forms. It is a primary source of Protein for the poor as it is the cheapest of any pulses used. This article is about the Top 10 Gram Producing States in India.
Although gram is produced in many more states of the country, but most of the production comes from Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh (Telangana) and Maharashtra. These five states produce more than 90 percent of total production in India.
According to 2013-14 figures, Madhya Pradesh is the largest producer of the gram with 26.90 lakh tonnes (32.73%) to its credit. Vidisha, Bhind, Morena, Chhatarpur, Jabalpur, Narsingpur, Dhar, Hoshangabad, Raisen, and Gwalior are the main producing districts.
Next to Madhya Pradesh is Rajasthan producing 16.0 lakh tonnes (19.46% of India) of a gram. In Rajasthan Jaipur, Dausa, Karauli, Sawai Madhopur, Alwar, Kota & Tonk, Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Churu, and Jhunjhunu are the main producing districts.
Maharastra holds the third position with 15.82% share in the total gram production of India. The bulk of gram in Maharashtra comes from Usmanabad, Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Nanded, Nashik, Solapur, Parbham and Beed districts.
In Utter Pradesh Banda, Hamirpur, Sitapur, Fatehpur, Sultanpur, Jalaun Jhansi, Allahabad, Agra, Kanpur and Barabanki districts produce most of the gram of the state.
In Karnataka Gram is produced in Gulbarga, Bijapur & Bangalore (Rural) and Davanagere districts.
In Haryana Hissar, Sirsa, Rohtak’ Mahendergarh, Gurgaon, Jind, Kaithal and Karnal districts are the main producers.
Gram in a small quantity is also produced in Bihar, Gujarat, West Bengal, Chhatisgarh, and Punjab.
